Happy President's Day!

Song of the Day: Hail to the Chief

Today we celebrated President's Day. Fitz had the day off, which was very nice. Katherine made some cinnamon muffins this morning, and we had an easy-going day of reading and writing. We're currently watching a documentary on Bill Clinton airing on PBS this evening that will continue tomorrow night. This morning we discussed our favorite presidents...

Favorite president? Why?
Fitz: James K. Polk. Because he did what he said he was going to do, he went to UNC, and he only ran for one term.
Katherine: John Adams. Because he was very influential in the founding of our country, was a man of integrity, and loved his wife.

In January 2009, we went to Richmond, Virginia, for a wedding, and the following day, we figured, why not? We drove a few more hours to Washington, D.C. Here are some pictures from that lovely, spontaneous day.

Fitz with the Capitol in the background, looking very stately...

...and here Katherine is looking up at the Washington Memorial from the ground.

Here's Fitz and his future home behind him.

We were wondering where our bailouts were...

Katherine's favorite spot, the National Gallery of Art.

And Fitz there too!

And yes, we did ride the merry-go-round. Katherine insisted.

  1. Polk is a great choice given your reasons. So too Mr. Adams, Kat. However, you both are a little mistaken. May I submit for your approval, Mr. William Henry Harrison, our distinguished 9th President. I know, I know, he took a long walk on a freezing cold day, gave a long winded speech in the still freezing temps, contracted pneumonia and died 9 days later. The first job of any elected official is "Do no Harm!" I think Mr. Harrison upheld his end of that promise very well. Just think if Jimmy Carter had molded his time in office after Mr. Harrison, or what of Mr. Buchanan or Mr. Pierce. 9 days in, discover you are under-qualified for the job and STEP DOWN!

  2. Haha, indeed! I think while I don't know his views on resignation, I do know that Fitz is a huge fan of abdication, which I think has a slightly different connotation, though both are essentially stepping down. I'm guessing he gets that from you ; ) And terms limits for Pete's sake! I think that any elected or appointed official, especially in the federal government, has to pass a test on the Constitution, memorize the Preamble as well as their oath of office, pledge allegiance to the flag everyday before they begin their work, and watch Mr. Smith Goes to Washington starring Jimmy Stewart.

    1. Obviously the presidency has terms limits, so I meant for everyone else...
