Standards

Song of the Day: This Is the New Year by A Great Big World

So it's the last day of spring, tomorrow summer starts, and I am in constant surprise and wonder by how fast things are moving. Nothing like seeing a cute blob turn into a talking, moving machine within a matter of months to make you realize how days evaporate.

Adlai is still mostly sleeping through the night, but for the past week, he's been waking up on the early side, around 6AM (although, in my book, anything before 9AM is early). He's not crying when I hear him through the monitor, he's chatting to himself. Chat chat chat. He's chatting even now as I type this.

"Aaaahhh geh ghebahhhh eeeeooh lksad.fhds.avj/goasief;oka.vdjhsilvsjdkvns.ka..." and so on.

This goes on for at least half an hour before he starts crying, not sobbing, but just, in babyspeak, "Mom! Dad! Come get me!!"

And then babble babble all day long.

Sometimes, it almost sounds like he's singing. We do sing a lot. The Itsy Bitsy Spider is a huge hit as is Breakin' the Chains of Love (mommy's edited version).

Totally unrelated side note: I think Fitz of Fitz and The Tantrums and our Fitz look a little similar. Practically twins if Fitz Barringer would bleach the front part of his hair.

Anyway, all this to say, the munchkin is growing up. Duh. But, what?? I mean, in only seven months he went from this:

to this:

He's talking, starting to figure out pulling up, eating chunks of food, moving, rolling...sometimes I just want to shout "Stop growing up!" and "That was incredible! Do it again!" all at the same time!

Life is so different from when he was first born to what it's like now. Back when he was first born, the maxim that got me through was "Low Standards." If Adlai ate well and if I got a shower, well, then that day was a success! That was it. That was the standard. Shower and food.

Now the standard is a lot more complicated. Lots of playtime. Practice crawling. Practice standing up. Eat a good dinner with real food. Slowly work in a second meal. Lots of liquid food. Bath time. Socialize with other people and babies.

And then there's me: Shower. Eat something. Make dinner. Fold something, anything just to lessen the mountain of wrinkled clean clothes. Try not to lose friends by falling off the planet. Check the mailbox. Check bank account.

I don't know what the maxim is these days. It should be something like, "Make it happen!" or "Don't just survive...thrive!"

It's probably more like, "Just fold something!" And sadly, that standard is not met most days. Oh well. Maybe the standard should be "Think about folding something, and if you can, fold it!"

But we're happy and healthy and yes a little wrinkled, and that's more than enough everyday.

The Best Pasta Recipe Ever

Song of the Day: What Makes a Good Man? by The Heavy

First, a video from his royal cuteness...

As many of you are well aware, pasta is a staple at our house. We eat penne, linguine, angel hair, shells, lasagna, you name it, we eat it. We eat it with red sauce, cream sauce, all kinds of sauce. Lots of delicious sauce.

But below is the most amazing recipe we have ever encountered. It is so simple. So perfect. Also an excellent arm exercise. It turns out perfectly cooked, silky yet al dente. And there's only one pan to clean! One! That's it!

I did cut back on the amount of onion, seemed like too much. I did, oh, about a third of an onion thinly sliced.

Behold its simplicity, its genius! Read it and weep! And then pull yourself together and make it!
